Rough Stone Wall Detailed I found this sample along a steep drop off at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Wasn't too hard to reach and the lighting was ambient enough for me to capture this one. I have wanted to return to this subject ever since I first did a very low detail scan. So here it is. I finally caught it on an overcast day and scanned it in 167 close up photos. :) I love it! I wanted to share some of my PhotoScanning work as I build up wall assets. I was really excited to find this top sample because I need that rougher hewn feel if I'm going to use these assets to build old world or fantasy elements.
Planar Stone Wall This wall has the unique characteristic where these rocks are flattened a bit on their exterior face making it somewhat universally planar. The detail is still retained and textured so they haven't been smoothed down like river rock. It's a really fun subject that was originally a part of a fireplace build. Designer Stone Wall![]()
This is a designer stone wall and much more of a modern structure. This was my first attempt at splitting a scan up into pieces so that more detail could be assembled for the final render. You can clearly see a seem I missed. ZBrush currently has a limit on how many polys it can handle on a single model. If I go over that 4 mil limit I usually crash my machine when trying to UV wrap the model. I'm really looking forward to ZBrush R7 or whatever it will be numbered. The promise of 64-bit in ZBrush is enticing to say the least. My machine has 32 gigs of RAM but I don't really get to access all that. Rocky Enclave This Rocky Enclave is another feature of Red Rocks and specifically I wanted to test if I could reasonably recover an enclave space. Some of my images ended up not aligning but they were outliers and not a great loss. My next task is to make surfaces like these into brushes and tiled textures. ![]()
Fresco Stucco Muted On a great overcast day I found this fresco styled stucco which is still a bit smooth. I was very happy that this micro texture came out so great. When I get a chance I'll have to convert it to a tiling texture. I even got the bottom lip pretty decently which is a good resource for building this style of stucco geometry. Cracked Stucco Cinder Block Wall This decomposing wall was just so perfect it felt like it was designed for a movie set. This is a stucco wall that is cracking off of the cinder block under structure. I moved to the east coast and there are so many great examples of rot out here its great for scanning. 230 RAW images just to show how much I love detail. Deep Recessed Designer Stone Wall This designer stone wall was exceptionally deep between the stones but it resolved very well in spite of the deep mortar wells. Dilapidated Wall The quality of advanced wear and decomposing structure of this wall was a special attraction to me. It is rather long, but still very useful for sourcing decay. It is apparent from the damage that this wall is a cinder block wall overlaid with stucco. Great for building up your derelict environments. Grey Rock Wall Here is one of my older scans (before I started shooting RAW) of a Grey Rock Wall shot in my favorite lighting (i.e.-overcast with a bit of snow on the ground). I was attempting to get a long section of rock wall. This scan was composed of 70 images taken with my Samsung NX300. This was also part of my slow transition to shooting planar surfaces from fairly parallel positions. ![]()
Wall Interior This was a great subject although at first it seems relatively mundane. The ability to break open a wall or show blight with internal structure seems very useful to me. This scan is composed of 226 RAW images. I think it came out great. These photoscanned models have 8k maps for UVs, color, depth & normals. Enjoy! Barn Wall I wanted to get a really clean scan of a barn wall. The aged paint flecks and even the uneven thickness of the boards all communicate the age of the subject. Scanned with 228 RAW images. I'm hoping that this scan can work great for creating repeatable textures. These photoscanned models have 8k maps for UVs, color, depth & normals. Enjoy! Barn Door This one was a little tricky because of all the overgrown vines embedded in this barn door. I tried to keep the polygons a little higher during optimization in order to leave plenty of room for those details. This was part of a larger scan that included the wall next to the door but I broke the scans into two separate assets to make them easier to handle and more useful over all. Scanned with 228 RAW images. It actually got a little hard to reach up high enough to cover the top as this was on a slope and I am only so tall. These photoscanned models have 8k maps for UVs, color, depth & normals. Enjoy!
